PINK ALLIANCE - BREAST CANCER SUPPORT OF THE BRAZOS VALLEY

Designated Charity of The 2015, 25th Annual Spring Bridal Show and Benefit

Pink Alliance – Breast Cancer Support of the Brazos Valley was formed by five women who experienced the overwhelming emotions that came with the diagnosis of breast cancer. When each of us received a diagnosis of breast cancer, we left our surgeons’ office with many questions but few answers, and didn’t know where to go to get those answers. The mission of this organization is to provide educational resources to women in our community who receive the diagnosis of breast cancer. We believe learning about the disease of breast cancer, and taking an active role with the medical team produces the best outcomes for each woman.

There are many educational materials and resources to help women and their families as they learn to cope with and manage the diagnosis of breast cancer. Women should have quick access to these resources, whether it is information to read, web addresses for internet sites, or community agencies and volunteers. At such a critical time, the newly diagnosed woman should not have to search out resources on her own.

The BVBCS has collaborated with the American Cancer Society to assemble a portfolio of pamphlets, books and other resources with relevant, useful information about topics such as: pathology reports, chemotherapy, surgical options, radiation therapy, sources for items such as breast prosthesis and wigs, and questions to ask their medical team. These portfolios have been placed in the offices of all local surgeons so when a woman hears, “You have breast cancer,” she will leave her physician’s office with information in hand.

The BVBCS in collaboration with the American Cancer Society sponsors Purple Teas in the community to bring information and resources to groups of women.
The group makes available certain resources when needed by breast cancer patients.

Resources from the American Cancer Society are also available, including 24-hour hotline support by phone.

We speak to organizations regarding breast cancer and emphasize the need for early detection.

BVBCS members believe the support of someone who has experienced breast cancer is invaluable in finding the strength to cope with the disease and to move forward as a survivor. We are available to mentor breast cancer patients and to share our experiences with them.

BVBCS members are: Nora Thompson, President; Marilyn Byrne, Vice President; Reba Ragsdale, Treasurer; Pam Stewart, Secretary and Selina Colwell.
